Laser Rot, San Diego, CA. – House, Funky House, Funk, Future Funk
Bio – When San Diego producer Laser Rot dropped his first official EP release in 2015 he was a little surprised, and completely thrilled, to watch as his funky house release “Freak The Funk” climb the Beatport Top 100 House Music charts; topping out at #13. Since then he’s had several releases in the top 100 House charts and continues to bring the funk in every aspect of his music.
Laser Rot was born and raised as Josh McCann in Columbus, Ohio; a not so small town in the Midwest. It was there in Columbus, during the 90’s when the U.S. underground rave culture was booming that Josh discovered, and fell in love with electronic dance music. This interest grew into a love for the culture, and an obsession for the music. Josh decided he was going to learn to DJ. So he bought some crappy used turntables and a mixer, and he started buying records and learning to beat match. Josh spent a lot of time practicing as well as a lot of time in the record stores; buying up as many records as he could.
“I gobbled any music with a good beat, and bought everything from 70’s disco, RnB and funk to the more underground sounds like techno, drum and bass and booty house”, recalls Josh.
In 2001 Josh began producing house music. Armed with only a Boss DR-202, a Korg Triton and some simple recording software he started learning to make beats.
Since then Laser Rot has spent countless hours in the studio molding and perfecting his flavor of fun and happy, funky house dance music.
“My influences are all over the place these days, from old school soulful funk to the dirtier sounds of electro house. I’m constantly being inspired to make happy funky music you can dance to”, Josh added.
Recently, Laser Rot’s newest project is bringing instruments to the stage for live performances rather than simply DJing his music.
Josh talks about his live performance project, “Djing is a wonderful way to get your music out there, and there’s no better feeling than to watch the crowd dancing to your music. I just wanted to do something more than just DJ. Thinking back a lot of my favorite shows had a live performance aspect to them, and I wanted to bring that energy, interest, and spontaneity to my sets.”
While Laser Rot’s passion for creating music is unmistakable, he is excited to bring his funky house beats live to the stage. Drum machines, synths, crazy effects, and even a funky talkbox are all part of his upbeat live house music performances geared to make you want to dance your face off.
“I really love creating dance music,’ remarks Josh, ‘It’s my passion. I love the way you can be having a bad day, and you hear a song that totally picks you up and completely changes your mood for the better; makes you dance in your seat even. That’s the sound I want my music to be.”
